Acid Reflux - What Causes It?

Acid Reflux occurs when the acid in your stomach (which helps break down the food you eat) leaves your stomach and heads up your esophagus – even though this “food tube” is supposed to only let food go from your mouth to your stomach.  The acid in the stomach is a strong acid called hydrochloric acid which can burn and irritate the lining of your esophagus.  What we usually call “heartburn” and also can cause  other symptoms, like indigestion or nausea.  If the acid gets as high as your throat it can cause coughing, hoarseness and a feeling like there's a lump in your throat.  Reflux can also trigger your nose to become stuffy and to produce more mucus.

What makes the acid flow in the wrong direction up toward your throat?  It can be caused by a number of factors.  There is a valve at the bottom of your esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter) that is supposed to keep food and acid in the stomach.  Sometimes the valve is not strong enough to do its job. The valve can also be weakened if it slides up into your chest instead of staying in your belly.  This is called a hiatal hernia.  It can also be overcome by a very large meal or the few extra pounds put on during the holidays.  Some foods that are high in fat can slow down how quickly the stomach properly empties things out.  Some foods and beverages like alcohol and caffeine can also relax this valve.

RefluxRaft helps reduce the symptoms of reflux caused by a number of these issues.  Ginger is helpful as a natural anti-inflammatory and has been noted to help the stomach move food in the right direction.  Licorice is a natural relieving remedy and can help coat and soothe the burning symptoms of reflux.  The alginate gel which forms the base of RefluxRaft is great at providing a barrier and helping that muscle at the bottom of the esophagus stay plugged.
