Finding Relief with RefluxRaft: Jayne’s Story

"Finding Relief with RefluxRaft," is a blog series dedicated to sharing the real-life experiences of people who have found respite from the disruptive symptoms of acid reflux, GERD, and LPR thanks to RefluxRaft and their healthcare team. We believe in the power of shared experiences and hope these stories offer encouragement and insights to those seeking relief.

This week, we're featuring Jayne's story. After years of misdiagnoses, countless doctor visits, and persistent throat-clearing that no one could explain, Jayne finally found relief—an astonishing 85% reduction in symptoms within just three days of using RefluxRaft. For the first time in months, she felt hope, clarity, and control over her health.

As an RN with 40 years of experience, I’ve encountered countless medical challenges, both personally and professionally. But nothing compares to the frustration and discomfort I endured this past year. In June, during what should have been a peaceful day on a trail counting butterflies, I experienced a full laryngospasm. Though I had experienced similar episodes in 2008 and 2009, this one felt more alarming. Thankfully, I knew how to manage it, breathing slowly through my nose until it passed. But I also knew it was a sign that something deeper was wrong.

I scheduled an appointment with an ENT the following week and underwent a nasal scope. The results showed that my laryngeal tissue was inflamed and irritated—a clear sign that my reflux was out of control. Having previously been on a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) years ago, I’d weaned off it after a couple of years and relied on over-the-counter solutions like Pepcid Complete as needed. It seemed to work well for a long time.

But this time was different. My ENT agreed that my reflux was exacerbated, and I knew I needed to take action.

A History of Frustration and Misdiagnoses

Reflux has been an ongoing battle for me, but my symptoms have always been atypical. I’ve never experienced classic heartburn or regurgitation. Instead, my symptoms have included persistent throat clearing and thick, sticky phlegm that seemed to cling to my larynx. These symptoms began to escalate in 2021, leading me to seek out additional testing.

An EGD and Bravo Test revealed gastritis and H. pylori, which we treated and eradicated, but my reflux symptoms persisted. My gastroenterologist assured me that my DeMeester score was only slightly elevated and suggested continuing with PRN medications. I followed the advice, but by June of 2024, when I experienced another laryngospasm, I knew I needed a more proactive approach.

I immediately adopted a GERD elimination diet, switched to alkaline water, stopped supplements, and made other lifestyle adjustments. Despite my efforts, I was still plagued by persistent throat clearing and thick yellow phlegm. I consulted an allergist, suspecting postnasal drip or allergies might be to blame, but testing revealed only mild grass allergies. The thick phlegm remained, and my symptoms worsened.

Turning Point: A Revelation

By October, I had consulted multiple practitioners, undergone various tests, and tried countless interventions, but nothing provided relief. I felt frustrated and discouraged. Why was no one addressing the yellow phlegm sticking to my larynx?

It was during one of my countless late-night Googling sessions that I stumbled upon the BackTable ENT podcast featuring Dr. Inna Husain. Listening to her episodes was a revelation. I finally learned how LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux) differs from GERD and why my symptoms—persistent throat clearing and phlegm—were being overlooked or misattributed.

Her insights were eye-opening. I realized that my symptoms were consistent with LPR, a condition caused by pepsin and bile salts rather than the acidic regurgitation commonly associated with GERD. It was then that I also discovered RefluxRaft, a product designed specifically for individuals like me. Inspired and hopeful, I ordered my first bottle and eagerly awaited its arrival.

Finding Relief with RefluxRaft

Within just three days of using RefluxRaft, I noticed an astonishing 85% reduction in my throat clearing. For the first time in months, I felt relief—and hope. While I’m still bringing up some clear mucus, I understand that healing takes time. My larynx has endured months of inflammation, but I finally feel like I’m on the right path.

RefluxRaft has become an essential part of my routine. I’ve even stopped taking daily esomeprazole, which has become a staple in my life despite its limited effectiveness. Now, I’m focused on recovery and prevention rather than masking symptoms.

One moment that stands out was a quiet drive home from errands. As I reflected on my progress and the new understanding I’d gained about my condition, tears began to stream down my face. They were tears of joy and relief—emotions I hadn’t felt in a long time. I finally knew what was causing my symptoms, and I had a solution that worked.

Why More Education Is Needed

As a healthcare professional, I can’t help but wonder why more practitioners aren’t educated on the distinctions between GERD and LPR. These conditions may share similarities, but they are fundamentally different in their causes and manifestations. My thick yellow phlegm, for example, wasn’t a sign of allergies or sinusitis, as many assumed. It was a classic symptom of LPR, yet it went unrecognized by multiple practitioners.

This experience has reignited my passion for patient education. When I see my ENT next month, I plan to share everything I’ve learned. I’ll also be taking along literature about RefluxRaft, which I believe could benefit so many patients who are suffering needlessly.

Gratitude and Moving Forward

RefluxRaft has not only improved my symptoms but also given me a renewed sense of purpose. I am committed to spreading awareness about LPR and helping others find relief. To the team behind RefluxRaft: Thank you for creating a product that addresses the root cause of reflux rather than merely masking symptoms. You’ve given me—and many others—a way to reclaim our quality of life.

Sincerely,
Jayne T., RN, BSN
