Alginate Supplements for Acid Reflux: How Alginate Therapy Works

If you’re comparing alginate supplements for acid reflux, here’s the short version: instead of suppressing or neutralizing stomach acid, they work by forming a protective raft that physically blocks acid from rising. RefluxRaft is built on that mechanism — Enhanced Alginate Therapy, a protective raft developed by ENT physicians — to deliver reflux relief that doesn’t come with a catch.

What is an alginate supplement, and how is it different?

An alginate supplement uses a natural fiber from kelp that forms a protective raft in your stomach. When it meets stomach acid, it creates a floating barrier that helps keep stomach contents from rising into the esophagus. Unlike antacids (which neutralize acid) or PPIs (which suppress acid production), it works mechanically — and it never enters your bloodstream.

That’s the difference in a sentence: it doesn’t fight acid, it stops the climb. Because the action is physical and non-systemic, alginate therapy is used for occasional reflux, GERD, and LPR (silent reflux).

How does the Alginate Therapy work?

When the sodium alginate makes contact with stomach acid, it forms a buoyant gel that rises and settles at the top of the stomach — right over the “acid pocket,” the pool of unbuffered acid that collects after meals and drives most post-meal reflux. The protective raft caps that pocket, so refluxing contents have less to push up.

In a study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Rohof et al., 2013), alginate therapy was shown to localize directly to the acid pocket and significantly reduce the number of reflux episodes compared with an antacid alone. RefluxRaft builds on that mechanism and adds functional botanicals like ginger root and deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) in our Lemon Ginger formula that help coat and protect the esophageal lining.

What does the clinical evidence say?

Enhanced Alginate Therapy is built on decades of peer-reviewed research. The strongest summary is a 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis in Diseases of the Esophagus (Leiman et al.), which pooled 14 studies and 2,095 participants and found that alginate-based therapies significantly improved the odds of resolving GERD symptoms compared with placebo or antacids (odds ratio 4.42; 95% CI 2.45–7.97).

Two honest caveats, because they matter:

  • In the same analysis, raft therapy appeared less effective than PPIs or H2 blockers in head-to-head comparison, though the difference was not statistically significant.

  • It’s best understood as relief for occasional and post-meal symptoms and as a non-systemic option — not a replacement for medical care when symptoms are frequent

Alginate vs. antacids vs. PPIs — what’s the difference?

Antacids bought you 30 minutes. Enhanced Alginate Therapy targets where reflux actually happens — the acid pocket — for up to four hours, with no rebound and no systemic effects.*

How do I choose an alginate supplement?

You should know exactly what’s in it, where it comes from, and how it works. When comparing options, look at:

  1. Raft strength. The barrier only works if the formula forms a durable, buoyant raft. RefluxRaft is made thick by design.
  2. Sodium level. These formulas carry sodium; lower-sodium options are easier to use daily. (RefluxRaft contains roughly half the sodium of leading brands.)
  3. Clean formulation. Look for zero added sugar and no parabens, saccharin, or dextrose.
  4. Who built it. Physician-founded formulas reflect real clinical input.
  5. Made and tested with care. U.S.-made and third-party tested for purity and consistency.

What is RefluxRaft?

RefluxRaft is powered by Enhanced Alginate Therapy — a protective raft, enhanced with targeted functional botanicals — developed by ENT physicians Dr. Spencer Payne and Dr. James Daniero, who saw firsthand what antacids and PPIs were doing to their patients. Not just alginate. Enhanced Alginate Therapy.

It’s drug-free with no rebound effect and no known side effects, low-sodium, zero sugar, vegan, made in the USA, and compatible with most medications — relief for occasional reflux, GERD, and LPR, used as needed or daily.* When reflux strikes, we raft.

Frequently asked questions

Is a alginate therapy safe to use every day?

Alginates are a natural fiber from kelp that have been used in foods for over a century and are generally well tolerated for regular use, with no rebound effect*. As always, check with your healthcare provider if you take medications or have kidney concerns or a sodium-restricted diet.

Does it work for LPR (silent reflux)?

RefluxRaft targets both acid and non-acid reflux, so it’s relevant for LPR symptoms like sore throat, hoarseness, and post-nasal drip by helping keep contents from reaching the throat and airways. Individual results vary.

When and how much should I take?

Take 1–2 teaspoons after meals and/or before bed — when the acid pocket forms and reflux is most likely.

Is it the same as an antacid?

No. Antacids neutralize acid; Enhanced Alginate Therapy forms a physical barrier and lasts up to four hours. They can be used together but work differently.

Does it contain iodine or mercury because it’s from kelp?

No — the kelp-derived fiber is purified, and RefluxRaft is third-party tested.
